Utility Knives and More
Segmented Utility Knives
Utility knives have blades that can be fully retracted for extra safety and storage, and can also be extracted when required. It is this ability of controlling the length of the blade that makes a utility knife useful for a wide variety of purposes, such as opening boxes without any damage and can be used for cutting anything open. Some utility knives also have a ratcheting mechanism which allows you to either lock the blade in place or move it back and forth.
There is a type of utility knife which comes in segments which you can break off once you find the knife tip dulling. It is the ratcheting mechanism of these knives that help you push the knife out of its housing so that you can get to the new segments, but once all the segments have been used, you will required to install a new blade to the knife.
Fixed Blade Knives
An additional type of utility knife is the fixed-blade utility knife, which has anchored razor blades. These knives provide more control and precision and best used in crafts. You can easily swapped the blades because they are small with varying widths by unscrewing it's housing.
If you learn to maintain your knife it will last much longer and work better for you. While a utility knife does not cost a lot it will keep it in a good working state. Fingerprints and moisture will only promote tarnishing so you should always make it a point to keep the blade dry by using an all cotton cloth or chamois.
Checking for Trouble Spots
It is not possible to avoid oxidation, but by doing your best to protect your knife, you can help reduce the chances of rust. In order to do your best to care for your knife, you should use a small, cotton cloth to apply a few drops of good quality silicon treatment or good wax to the blade. Tarnish spots indicate the start of rusting so you should make it a point to periodically check your utility knife for trouble spots. Standard metal cleaner or polish should be used to clean off any stains you find on your knives. When purchasing a knife, it is important to store them away safety to eliminate injury occurring to anyone within the same environment, and to eliminate misuse, look into investing in a storage system for your knife. Not only do you need to care for your knife, but it is imperative to care for anyone inexperienced who may come into contact with it.
